Instruction in psychology as a distinct discipline was first offered at Northwestern in 1900 by Professor (later President) Walter Dill Scott, who had been trained in experimental psychology at the University of Leipzig in the 1890's. The Department of Psychology was created in 1909 by dividing the former Department of Philosophy and Psychology.
